Religious School Director
Location: Millburn, NJ 07041
Congregation B’nai Israel of Millburn, NJ seeks a creative and energetic Religious School Director to build on our strong and well-established program, and to lead and grow our religious school. In the initial phase, the priority will be to: 1) create a compelling vision for the school; 2) review the curriculum, recommend and implement modifications that will excite and motivate teachers and students, while retaining the unique and special aspects of the current program; 3) get to know the teachers, students, and parents; and 4) plan for opening the school in the fall of 2025. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate who is innovative and motivated to build an exciting and unique religious school in collaboration with seasoned clergy and established administrative support. This is a part-time position requiring a commitment of approximately 15-20 hours per week, inclusive of school hours on Sunday mornings and Tuesday afternoons/evenings. Total enrollment for next Fall (Grades K-7) is anticipated to be around 25-30 students with potential for growth and an expanded role for the Director moving forward.
Salary: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00 Annually
Responsibilities and expectations:
• Develop an overall vision and curriculum for the school in collaboration with clergy and the religious school board.
• Create a positive and engaging environment, and a program that will bring our kids together, inspire them and instill a love of Jewish learning.
• Supervise, motivate, evaluate, and support the professional development of teachers. Recruit new teachers as needed.
• Develop and manage the school calendar in collaboration with the clergy and religious school board.
• Develop class schedules for school days, as well as for individualized Hebrew one-on-one sessions.
• Ensure timely communication to parents regarding school events, activities, and student progress. Coordinate closely with teachers and administrative staff.
• Develop strong positive relationships with parents through ongoing proactive communication and outreach.
• Be a continuous presence during religious school hours.
• Develop and manage an annual budget.
• Coordinate with and support administrative staff in ensuring timely enrollment of students and maintaining enrollment records.
• Coordinate with administrative staff to purchase materials and supplies.
• Participate in monthly meetings with the religious school board.
• Support a vibrant and active Parent’s Association and create opportunities for parental engagement, and teacher appreciation.
• Collaborate with our Marketing team to develop and implement publicity and marketing strategies to promote the school.
• Develop Shabbat and holiday programming.
Required Background:
We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about Jewish education, knowledgeable of best practices, and ready to introduce innovative programming to engage and inspire our kids. Candidate needs to be warm, open and accessible, a good communicator, organized with strong administrative skills, and team oriented.
• Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree in Jewish education preferred
• 3-5+ years of professional experience in an education related field or other directly relevant experience
• Experience leading and managing a team
• Understanding of Conservative Jewish values, rituals, customs and holiday practices
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to and communicate effectively with clergy, staff, lay leadership, parents, and volunteers
• Proficient at preparing and managing budgets and calendars
• Knowledge of ShulCloud preferred
• Self-starter with effective time management skills and a demonstrated ability to balance short-term needs with long-term strategic planning
